Gable doesn’t want to come out of retirement to coach again

March 30, 2006 By admin

Former Iowa coach Dan Gable says he has no plans to return to coaching. His comments come one day after his successor at Iowa Jim Zaklesky was fired after nine years at the helm. Gable says it would be a difficult time in his career and with his family and health to come back.

Zalesky’s ouster came on the same day Bobby Douglas was fired at Iowa State and replaced with Cael Sanderson. Gable says it shows what kind of expectations both schools have for their wrestling programs. Gable says it shows you have to do a tremendous job at an institution in Iowa in the sport of wrestling. Gable says even a very good job sometimes isn’t good enough as other states are taking over.

Gable was asked if he will be involved in the search for a new Hawkeye coach. Gable says it depends on Iowa Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby, but Gable says, “I’m sure he’ll ask me my opinion.”
