Denison gets more air time over immigration

April 8, 2006 By admin

Denison is getting more attention for its diverse population. Darren Gersh, the Washington, D.C. bureau chief for the National Public TV program “Nightly Business Report,” visited Denison this past week to produce a segment on the town.

Gersh says his conversation with an economist regarding immigration prompted his visit. He says the economist told him that immigrants are no longer clustering in a few gateway states like California and Texas, but are instead dispersing across the country. Gersh says he did some research and came across a book about Denison. The book by Dale Maharidge detailed the Hispanic community in Denison.

Gersh met with officials from the city and Farmland Foods, as well as Hispanic residents. Gersh says he was impressed with what he saw. He says he goes to many small towns and goes to Main Street to see what’s going on. Gersh says most of those Main Streets are dieing out, and he was impressed that Denison’s Main Street is thriving.

The special segment on Denison is expected to air sometime in the middle part of May. N-B-C news recently taped a similar segment in Denison that aired March 29th.
