The Iowa Wesleyan baseball program is making major strides under second year coach Matt Cloud. After posting an 18-41 mark in 2005 the Tigers are 16-16 overall and currently sit in second place in the Midwest Classic Conference race. Cloud says the biggest factor in their success has been a pitching staff that has much more depth this season.
As a staff the Tiger’s earned run average is under four-point-five which is considered outstanding in college baseball. He says they had a goal at the beginning of the year to be under four-point-seven, and he says they have a chance to be better than that.
Cloud says his team is gaining confidence. The Tigers have won three extra inning affairs in the past couple of weeks. He says they played a really tough non-conference schedule early and says they got beat up a little, but he feels that will work out for the best.
Tigers trail conference leader Grand View by a game in the loss column and Cloud says his team is thrilled about being part of a conference race. Iowa Wesleyan visits Momouth of Illinois on Tuesday in a non-conference game.
