Louisiana residents in Iowa encouraged to mail in votes

April 18, 2006 By admin

Louisiana residents who temporarily moved to Iowa after last fall’s hurricanes need to get their absentee ballots in the mail very soon to take part in the upcoming elections. Richard Watkins, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, says evacuees in Texas have been inundated with information about the elections, but folks now living in Iowa may not have gotten the word.

Watkins says “We’re trying to get as much information about the absentee ballot to the displaced residents of Louisiana, with these critical elections coming up and taking advantage of the Postal Service’s presence in about 15-hundred post offices in Iowa and Nebraska.” He says hundreds of posters have gone up in post offices in both states in an effort to let Louisiana residents know the elections are, for some areas, this weekend.

Watkins says “It will help determine the direction that Louisiana takes and the city of New Orleans. It’s very important that these people take advantage of their right to vote.” The Orleans Parish has a primary election on Saturday and absentee ballots need to be received by Friday. Other parishes are having elections
April 29th, with ballots due by the 28th. For more information, contact the Louisiana Secretary of State Elections Division at 800-883-2805.
