A freight train rolling through western Iowa was heavily damaged Thursday when one of its engines caught fire near Denison. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they discovered that the first engine had flames shooting out the top of the motor area.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a turbo had apparently malfunctioned, causing the unit to catch fire. In addition, hot oil from the malfunctioning turbo was blown over onto the next engine and onto the ground below, causing a small grass fire to break out.

The turbo sustained major damage, disabling the engine. No injuries were reported, but railroad officials say damage to the train could reach one million dollars.
