University of Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby has resigned to take over one of the country’s top athletic departments. Bowlsby takes over a Stanford athletic department that won 50 team national championships under former A.D. Ted Leland who left earlier this year.

Former san Francisco 49ers coach Bill Walsh has been serving as interim A.D. for the Cardinal. Bowlsby took over at Iowa in 1991 after a stint at U-N-I and has seen the football program enjoy unprecedented success the past few years.

The basketball program won a pair of Big Ten tournament titles but there was the controversial ouster of former hawkeye coach Tom Davis and the legal troubles of former Hawkeye Pierre Pierce that hurt the program. He will take over at Stanford in July.
