Iowa Wesleyan baseball team advances in tourney

May 9, 2006 By admin

The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team has advanced to the NAIA regionals for the first time in 14 years. The Tigers finished second to William Penn in the Midwest Classic Conference and opens the region tournament in Joliet, Illinois Wednesday night against St. Francis. Wesleyan finished conference play with a record of 15-10.

Tiger coach Matt Cloud says they don’t have a superstar, but every day someone steps up and does the job. Cloud says they probably won’t have a lot of guys on the all conference team, but he says they have a lot of hard-nosed guys who play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.

Cloud feels his team can make some noise in the tournament, and says he likes their chances with his pitching staff. He says his staff is probably the best in the league and it sets up well for tournament play.

William Penn will take on Purdue University North Central Wednesday afternoon. The Statesmen are seeded second. Tomorrow morning, Grand View goes up against the top seed St. Xavier.
