With Memorial Day approaching, many Iowans are planning their summer vacations, but a travel expert says high gasoline prices will force some of us to stay closer to home. Triple-A-Iowa spokeswoman Rose White says tuning up your car, van or S-U-V is a good idea before hitting the road. White says that might help prevent some additional costs associated with an expensive tow or repair bills.

Also, she says if you’re booking ahead for lodging, check to see if they have discounts for motor clubs, military or AARP. White suggests getting a room with a kitchenette to cut down on meal costs. She emphasizes, there’s nothing wrong with vacationing within Iowa as there’s plenty to see and do within just a short distance.

White says if you’re planning to visit a state park, there are many that are popular but there are also a host of hidden jewels. She says the motor club’s survey finds gasoline prices are still near record highs as the summer driving season nears, which will mean an increased demand — and increased prices.

The statewide average is around $2.80 a gallon but there may be worse news coming with the hurricane season starting June 1st and there’s also an indication of upward pressure on the commodities market which could mean higher prices within a week or so. White says with tight fuel supplies, it’s likely prices of three-dollars a gallon will again be seen soon.
