Missing VA laptop located, records apparently safe

July 1, 2006 By admin

A laptop computer loaded with personal and financial data of millions of soldiers and veterans was found this week, with the data apparently safe. Even though it had been sold by a dealer in stolen goods, there’s been no sign yet that any of the credit information was stolen or used. Pat Palmersheim, Executive Director of the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, says the data wasn’t easily available. Palmersheim says the program on the computer is a special one created for the VA to use for its data. “It’s not just an Excel (spread) sheet where everybody could access it…” Federal forensics workers reviewed the computer and say it looks like that database had not been accessed.
