20th annual Iowa Games open today

The 20th annual Iowa Games open today in Ames. This will be the biggest of the two weekends for the event with competition some of the biggest sports like youth soccer, track and field and basketball.

“We have over 600 athletes in softball, so it was a big jump for softball,” Iowa Games executive director Jim Hallihan says. “We have the majority of our sports this weekend along with the torch run, the finals fest, opening ceremonies, family night, all the things that go along with opening weekend so it’s a busy time.”

It all begins today (Thursday) with competition in tennis and golf. On Friday, all the soccer teams will play. Hallihan says if you decide at the last mionute you want to be part of the Iowa Games, you still have a chance. “There are 15 sports that are still available to sign up on site,” Hallihan says. To find the list, go to www.iowagames.org or call the Iowa Games office at 1-888-777-8881 and hit zero for a list of the Iowa Games games which allow on-site registration.

In all, competition in 53 different sports will occur over the next two weekends in Ames.
