Tama County Supervisors, following in the footsteps of other Iowa counties, are in the process of enacting a keg registration ordinance. This week the proposed measure passed a vote on its first reading.

Supervisor Larry Vest says the ordinance stemmed from a request by the Tama County Sheriff’s office. Vest says it’ll require retailers to attach a registration number to the keg so it can be traced, to keep alcohol from falling into the hands of minors.

Vest says there is little opposition to the proposed ordinance. He says the sheriff and county attorney back the measure, as the local health department does also, as it’s involved in concerns about underage drinking. In fact, he says, “We’ve had support, but no opposition.” Two more readings are scheduled. If approved, the ordinance would take effect September 23rd.
