Iowa native Zach Johnson is tied for the lead at the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities. Golfers didn’t finish the first round because of darkness, but Johnson was tied for the lead with a seven under par 64. Johnson felt like his putting game was his strong suit on Thursday.

“I told myself on the front nine — my back side — that ‘you know what, you’re putting it well. You’re seeing the line. You’re hitting it on your line. Just continue doing that because you just never know what’s going to happen the next day,'” Johnson told reporters. “When you’ve got it rolling you’ve got to continue to take that…I feel good about starting this way.”

Johnson felt good about his tee shots, too — and couldn’t remember missing a fareway all day. “I was able to remain aggressive and take advantage of those putts when I could,” Johnson said.

Johnson, an Iowa City native, calls himself a “routine” type of person. “It’s a good start. The momentum I have I want to continue,” Johnson said. “Score is not a big deal. As long as I’m hitting good shots and executing and giving myself opportunities, that’s all I care about.” Johnson went pro in 1998. He’s finished second in P-G-A tour events twice this year.
