The Class 4A quarterfinals highlighted Wednesday’s action at the state baseball tournament and fourth-ranked West Des Moines Valley showed it means business in a bid for a fourth consecutive title. The Tigers scored fiour runs in the first and pounded Urbandale 16-1. Fifth-rated Mason City scored a run in the first and added five more in the second as the Mohawks rolled past Ottumwa 10-0 in another class 4A quarterfinal round game. Danny Rose gave up only three hits for Mason City and also had one of the Mohawks eight hits. It was a disappointing finish for the Bulldogs and coach Ryan Woods whose team committed five errors. Ottumwa ends the season 27-16.Adam Peterschmidt scored on a wild pitch to cap a three-run seventh inning as Davenport Central rallied for a 4-3 win over Linn-Mar in another class 4A quarterfinal. Linn-Mar opened the scoring in the first with a pair of runs on a throwing error. The Lions close the season with a record of 25-13. Cedar Rapids Kennedy rallied with four in the bottom of the seventh as the Cougars stunned tenth-ranked Des Moines Lincoln 7-6. The game ended when Teddy Shonka’s fly ball into right field appeared to be lost in the sun by Lincoln outfielder Miko Bernstein. Kennedy coach Brett Hoyer says the key was hanging in when the game looked like it might get out of hand. Cory Tilson‘s one out single up the middle scored the game winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning as Western Dubuque edged number-seven Saydel 2-1 in a class 3A opening round contest. Tilson also was the winning pitcher as he took over for Bobcat starter Billy Schmitt who went nine innings, struck out 13 and yielded only one run.Action resumes at noon with the semifinals in 1A; tonight it is the semifinal round in class 2A.
