Funeral is Saturday for Iowa soldier, killed in military vehicle crash in Mississippi

Funeral services will be held Saturday for a western Iowa man who died while undergoing training exercises in Mississippi. Sergeant First Class, George W. “Bill” Dauma died July 20th near Camp Shelby, Mississippi, after the Hum-Vee he was riding in, was struck from behind by a large truck as it traveled on Highway 98. The driver of the vehicle and another passenger were hospitalized. Dauma joined the Guard in 1990 and served in the infantry overseas in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He signed up with the Alaska National Guard in 2005 and was stationed in Fairbanks. During his stint in the military, Dauma was awarded at least six campaign medals. The 37-year-old was born in Fairfield. He played football at and graduated from the Elk Horn-Kimballton High School in western Iowa’s Audubon County. Dauma leaves behind his wife Tammy, of Elk Horn, and his parents in Brooklyn, Iowa. Funeral services are set for one p-m Saturday in Des Moines.
