Softball tourney moves to 2A, 4A semifinals

August 3, 2006 By admin

It is a busy night of semifinal round action at the state softball tournament. It begins in class 2A where the top two ranked teams hope to advance to Friday’s championship game.

Top ranked Solon takes a 49-4 record into a matchup with number-five Turkey Valley, but despite their lofty ranking the Spartans say they don’t feel added pressure. Shortstop Jenny Schuelke who had a home run in Solon’s first round victory over Mid-Prairie, says they’re just going and having fun. Turkey Valley first baseman Beth Schaufenbuel says she feels the Trojans are ready for the challenge. In the other 2A semi, number two North Polk takes on Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

In class 3A, Third rated Clear Creek-Amana will go up against Cedar Rapids Xavier and top ranked Spirit Lake, which got a perfect game from Katie Brown in a first round victory over New Hampton, will take on number eight Harlan. In class 4A, Fort Dodge makes a first ever appearance in the semifinals as the Dodgers take on top ranked Des Moines East.

Tournament officials have moved that game from diamond 2 to diamond one because of the expected overflow crowd. The other 4A contest matches second ranked West Des Moines Valley against number three Linn-Mar.
