D-O-T makes historic photos available on-line

August 10, 2006 By admin

The Iowa Department of Transportation has released some historic images that go way back to the early days of travel in the state.

D-O-T spokesperson Dena Gray-Fisher says there’s now an archive area on the D-O-T website where you can view copies of more than one-thousand photos. She says the D-O-T has an extensive collection transportation-related images.

Gray-Fisher says some photos date back to the late 1800’s before interstates and S-U-V’s became the norm. She says they used some modern technology to copy some of the very early photos from fragile glass negatives.

Gray-Fisher says the photos show all types of things. She says they include images of early snow removal to bicycles and trains and vintage automobiles. Gray-Fisher has viewed the photos and said one thing struck her from the images. She says the change in the mode of transportation from streetcars to interurban railroads, modes of transportation that are making a comeback today.
