High gasoline prices are stretching the budgets of everyone from farmers to small business owners. Non-profit groups, which depend on donations and grants to stay afloat, are also feeling the pinch.

Judy Peschio of the American Red Cross Heartland Chapter in Omaha/Council Bluffs, says it costs more than ever to fuel vehicles used to respond to disasters. Peschio says “Like everyone else, we feel the pain at the gas pump. We have to absorb the increased costs into our budget and run business as usual.” She says her organization also offers a food pantry and runs an energy assistance fund to help people struggling to make ends meet.

Triple-A says gas prices in Iowa are now averaging two-92 a gallon, that’s seven cents below the national average. A month ago, the state average was two-86 a gallon. A year ago, it was two-39.
