The Waterloo Police Department is implementing the use of tasers in an effort to reduce the chances of injuries when officers encounter violent subjects. The Waterloo City Council recently approved the initial purchase of 50 tasers. There are plans to buy 50 more in 2007.

On Monday, Waterloo police officers were issued and trained in the use of the X-26 taser, a weapon that delivers an electronic shock which temporarily disables a person allowing officers to refrain from using lethal force. Waterloo police officers were trained in the proper deployment, care and use of a taser and took part in several scenarios involving their possible use.

Waterloo fire rescue paramedics were also present to learn the effects and after-care of individuals who are rendered helpless by a taser. Fifty Waterloo officers are now carrying the weapon on their duty belts. Next year, the majority of Waterloo’s police force will be carrying tasers.
