Iowa soccer team looks for improvement with new coach

August 23, 2006 By admin

The Iowa women’s soccer team hopes to make strides this season with a new coach. Ron Rainey took over a program that has won a total of nine games in the last three years. Rainey feels the player are adjusting to the new coaching staff. Rainey says he hopes the players will see some differences in practice this fall that will let them see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Rainey says hard work is one of the most crucial elements in building a program. Rainey says no one feels sorry for you, they just want to beat you, so he says they have to control how hard they work and put themselves in a position to get more results.

Rainey says while the program has struggled in recent years the cupboard is not bare. He says they have some players that do things at a very high tactical level and says they’ll have moments where they are very effective against the top teams in the conference. Rainey says the goal is to stretch those moments out longer.
The Hawkeyes open the season this Friday at Missouri.
