Crescent man dies in Pottawattamie County accident

August 28, 2006 By admin

A western Iowa man is dead and another is in custody after a hit-and-run accident last night (Sunday). Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker says the accident involving a green Ford Taurus happened just before seven P.M. just south of Crescent.

Danker says the car was southbound on the Old Lincoln Highway when it went out of control and traveled into the east ditch where it struck a man who was in the ditch in front of his residence. The victim is identified as 75-year-old Ralph Mathews of Crescent. Danker says Mathews was taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he later died.

The sheriff says deputies found that the driver of the vehicle ran from the scene, but they were able to locate and apprehend him. That driver of the car was identified as 36-year old Robert Martin of Magnolia. Martin is charged with motor vehicle homicide, driving while revoked, public intoxication and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He’s being held in the Pottawattamie County Jail.
