Goldwing riders rally in Des Moines

A group of bikers from Iowa and seven other states is in Des Moines this weekend for their annual rally. Ron and Karen Knudtson head up what’s called “Region E” of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association. Karen says they’re are at least 500 riders taking part. She says it includes eight states, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Knudtson says they have all kinds of activities planned.

Knudtson says they’ll have all kinds of motorcycle items for sale, they pick a Region E couple of the year. Knudtson says they’ve opened the event up to people who ride other types of motorcycles too. Knudtson says while there’ll be some 500 bikers — it’s not anything like the wild motorcycle rallies you might imagine. She says, “No, we’re Goldwingers, so are average age people is 55.”

Knudtson says the Honda Gold Wing riders are a loyal bunch who have fun. She says they have a love of motorcycles and now many of them are turning their two-wheelers into trikes. The event is being held today at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines. Knudtson says there are many events that are open to the public.
