The deadline is approaching for nominations for this years class of the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame. Jody Benz of the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service says they’re looking to honor people who have had a long history of volunteering. She says they’re people who’re volunteer firefighters, volunteered for disaster relief, help tutor in schools, or any type of volunteer service.

Benz says those who are chosen will be part of a special induction ceremony November 1st during the Iowa Conference on Volunteer Service in Des Moines. Benz says it’s import to recognize volunteer efforts. She says volunteers are not in it for the money and most do not seek any type of recognition, and this is a way to thank volunteers for all their contributions.

Benz says research indicates that Iowans do a lot of volunteering. Benz says the national average is that nearly 29-percent of people spend some time volunteering. She says in Iowa nearly 40-percent report they spend time volunteering, which translates to hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours. Benz says the research indicates that a volunteer hour is worth 18-dollars and four cents.

Benz says it’s easy to nominate a volunteer. She says the nomination forms are available on the commission’s website and they must be returned by September 20th. The website address is: www.volunteeriowa.org .
