Iowa Congressman Leonard Boswell says the U.S. has gotten safer, but more needs to be done. Boswell is a democrat who serves on the House intelligence committee and says he’d like to see the recommendations of the 9/11 commission implemented. Boswell says he’s concerned about port security and gaps in rail security. Boswell says “there’s a ways to go.”

Some democrats have been critical of President Bush’s speech Monday, saying it was too political as the president talked about Iraq. Boswell isn’t joining that criticism. Boswell says the speech could have been better, as he says right after 9/11 the whole world wanted to help the U-S, but Boswell says “we just didn’t do as good as I think we could have been done,” to bring people together.

Boswell said one other thing stood out in the president’s speech. Boswell says he was pleased as the president says there was no connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11. Boswell says he always felt there was not connection between the two, and Boswell says he felt we should have done more in Afghanistan to get Osama bin Laden. Boswell represents the third district and is running for a sixth term, and face republican Jeff Lamberti in the November election.
