Tuesday’s school board elections took some unusual turns in parts of northern Iowa. In the Algona School District, newcomer and substitute teacher Sheryl Grether bested two incumbents in a three-way race for two seats. Thirteen-year incumbent Carl Westling is out.

Keith Kuecker was reelected. In the Woden/Crystal Lake School District in Hancock County, one race was totally write-in as Pat Hobbs beat Leroy Vreize seven votes to two. Wile in the North Kossuth School District, Gary Anderson was running unopposed and won a district school board seat by a vote of 19-to-15, with all 15 votes being write-ins.
