Authorites have released the name of a southwest Iowa man who died after being hit by a pickup Thursday night in Davenport. Police Captain David Struckman says 78-year-old Allen Heaton died and his 75-year-old wife Beverly was seriously injured after the couple was hit by a pickup as they crossed a street at around 8:30 P.M. Thursday.

The Corning couple was in Davenport attending a family gathering. Following the accident, the Heaton’s were taken to a local hospital where the elder Heaton died while undergoing a surgical procedure. His wife has since been transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City, where she was listed in guarded condition. The driver of the pickup, 41-year-old Leonard Holmes, of Colona, Illinois, was not injured.

Captain Struckman says there was no evidence to suggest Holmes had been speeding or driving carelessly prior to the accident, which occurred in the 52-hundred block of Welcome Way. The accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
