A northwest Iowa woman has completed her cross-state walk to raise money for the disease that killed her father.

Jody Moats of Akron started her walk September 1st in Sioux City and finished in Dubuque this past week. Moats called the adventure “Hike Iowa For Hope” and it raised several thousand dollars for Pan-CAN, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, along with the June E. Nylen Cancer Center in Sioux City.

“I don’t know if I could’ve gone another day. My legs are trying to tell me that this was enough. It was a great, great experience. It seemed like it went so fast and then there were days where you thought it was never going to end,” Moats says.

Moats says she wanted to do something that would have impact and draw attention to pancreatic cancer and she hopes she’s started a tradition. She wants to make it an annual event but already knows she can’t do a walk across the whole state next year. Moats hopes others might like to help her in the effort, walking town-to-town.

Moats’ father, Darwin Hartnett of Webster City, died in July of last year.

Pan-CAN is an advocacy group that focuses attention on the need to find a cure.
