Iowa’s two largest utilities are offering Iowans a money-saving rebate on energy-saving light bulbs. Customers of Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy are urged to replace their five most-used regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. MidAmerican spokesman Allan Urlis says switching to those new bulbs can save a typical Iowa household more than 60-dollars a year in energy costs.

Urlis says Iowans can buy the bulbs for as little as 99-cents with a two-dollar instant cash-back rebate. He says the compact fluorescent light bulbs use 75-percent less energy and last up to ten-times longer than standard incandescent light bulbs. He says the program “Change a Light, Change the World” first ran last year and received overwhelming support.

Urlis says it’s being run again this fall — from October first through November 30th. He says you can buy the compact fluorescent bulbs at stores across Iowa and get the instant rebate. Stores include: Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Hardware Hank, Menards, Mills Fleet Farm, Theisen’s, True Value, Trustworthy Hardware and Hy-Vee. Urlis says the program was revived because of its popularity last year, during which 90-thousand Iowans bought some 397-thousand fluorescent light bulbs.

Over the lifetime of those bulbs, he says that’s a savings of 11-million dollars on electric bills and they will prevent 183-thousand tons of greenhouse gas emissions. He says “It’s a simple and convenient way to use less energy and save money on your home energy costs and it’s consistent with MidAmerican’s commitment to help its customers manage their energy costs more effectively. Bottom line, it’s good for our customers and it’s good for the environment at the same time.”
