Independence VFW flag burned

October 28, 2006 By admin

A teenager from Independnece is charged with flag-burning. Independence Police Chief Doug Rasmussen says around eight o’clock Tuesday evening there were students in and outside the local VFW hall. Inside, there was some kind of young people’s dance class. Outside, another group of students were hanging around. The chief says one or more of the kids outside allegedly set fire to the flag on its flagpole outside the building. Somebody else called the cops. When officers got there, they found smoldering remains of the flag and its rope on the ground. The flag had been flying at the time, as it’s left up all night with a light on it, as custom requires. A 15-year-old girl from Independence is charged with second-degree arson and flag desecration. She was released to the custody of her parents.
