Electric outage in NW IA caused by MN wreck

November 3, 2006 By admin

A truck hit a power pole in southern Minnesota, knocking out electricity all the way down into northwest Iowa. A spokesman for Alliant Energy says a fertilizer truck struck hit a power pole supporting a high-voltage feeder line just east of Worthington, Minnesota. The lines fell on other lines, cutting power as far south as Estherville and Terrill, Iowa. Power went out at about 12:15 and was restored fairly quickly in those towns. But the same incident did damage in electric substations in Spirit Lake, Estherville and Lake Park. Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative staff say six substations were effected, but were back on-line at about 1:30. Over 3000 Alliant Energy customers were without power for about an hour in Spirit Lake and Okoboji. Crews have replaced the pole in Minnesota and repaired the damage to the substations.
