Iowa Democrats have won the governorship and a majority of seats in both the Iowa House and Senate. Democrats have won at least 27 seats in the Iowa Senate and sources say at least 54 seats in the Iowa House will belong to Democrats when the Iowa Legislature convenes in January.Democrats have also picked up a congressional seat in Iowa. Bruce Braley, a lawyer from Waterloo, was elected Iowa’s first district congressman tonight, defeating Quad Cities businessman Mike Whalen. Whalen was trying to hold the seat for Republicans as Congressman Jim Nussle bowed out of the House and tried to seize control of the statehouse for Iowa Republicans.Nussle told supporters earlier this evening “the verdict is in and people want some change.” Chet Culver is the Democrat who will become Iowa’s governor in January.Iowa’s second district congressional race is too close to call as Democrat Dave Loebsack, a Cornell College political science professor, is running neck-in-neck with Republican Congressman Jim Leach — a 30 year incumbent.Congressman Tom Latham and Congressman Steve King, both Republicans, were re-elected this evening. Iowa’s other Congressman, Leonard Boswell — a Democrat, defeated his Republican challenger.
