After a week in limbo the Drake football season has ended. The Bulldogs would have played in the December second “Gridiron Classic” at Mounmouth University had Pioneer Football League champion San Diego earned a spot in the national playoffs. They did not get in and the Bulldogs must be content with a 9-2 finish to the season.

Drake coach Rob Ash says this is one of the best football teams he’s ever had at the school. Ash says their only losses were to U-N-I and San Diego, and the nine wins has only been done twice before in the history of the school. Ash says this team is as good as the championship teams he’s had at Drake.

The Bulldogs put together one of their best seasons despite losing quarterback Derek Retherford to a season-ending injury at the halfway point. Ash says that’s the most remarkable thing about the season, as they started three different guys at quarterback and all three played well, even though each was starting for the first time. Ash says to win nine games is a credit to the quarterbacks and the perserverance of the entire team.
