Des Moines area girl dies after her car was hit by fire truck

A Des Moines area girl died Sunday after she was critically hurt in a collision with a fire truck last week. 16-year-old Erika Schwager of Bondurant had been in a coma since the accident last Monday night outside Valley West Mall in West Des Moines. Witnesses say Schwager was trying to beat the West Des Moines fire truck through the intersection, causing the wreck that involved two other cars but no other serious injuries. Urbandale police are still investigating the crash. The fire truck was headed for the mall for what turned out to be a false alarm. Schwager was a student at Des Moines Christian School where grief counselors are now on hand for her classmates.
