The state’s “Character Counts!” program is sponsoring an all-day workshop at the University of Iowa today for high school student-athletes and coaches. Scott Raecker, executive director of the Institute for Character Development, says the “Pursuing Victory With Honor Summit” will be held in Iowa City. The featured speaker is Jeffrey Marx, author of “Seasons of Life,” a book about character in athletics. Workshops will include topics like: becoming an effective leader, illegal substance abuse, sportsmanship, and valuing and respecting differences. Raecker says the summit will focus on how athletics can be used to promote sportsmanship and good character. Raecker says it’s a great opportunity for Iowa coaches and students to focus on how to continue enhancing and sustaining championship character within their programs. Raecker is expecting several hundred participants from across Iowa. In addition to the workshops, they’ll be treated to a Kinnick Stadium tour and lunch in the new press box. Raecker says groups of young people are being brought from all over the state, even from rival schools that are sharing a bus as part of an effort to build character and synergy between opponents.
