A 23-year-old Marine from Greenfield has died in Iraq. The Department of Defense has not confirmed his death, but Lance Corporal C.J. Miller’s family says the 23-year-old was killed Monday morning by a roadside bomb.

Miller’s mother has told a Des Moines television station that her son was working in a unit that defused Improvised Explosive Devices, which the military calls IEDs. She doesn’t know whether he was killed by a roadside bomb that hit his humvee or whether an IED his unit was working to defuse exploded.

Miller was a 2001 graduate of Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield. He enlisted in the Marines and was sent to Iraq in September of this year. Miller married a native of nearby Orient last year and his wife — Jackie — lives in San Diego, where Miller’s Marine unit is based.
