Ashford coach happy with progress of team

December 14, 2006 By admin

In his second season at the helm Ashford University women’s basketball coach Chris Powers is happy with the strides the program has made. The Saints are 7-6 heading into Friday night’s game at Central College.

Powers says he got the job too late to recruit in his first year and this year they’re going through some other recruiting things involving money. Powers says injuries and a couple of ineligible girls have hurt their numbers.

Powers says with only nine players they are forced to contend with a lack of depth. He says you have to avoid injuries, and they’re trying to avoid injuries right now. Powers says they also can’t get into foul trouble.

The Saints have two more games before a lengthy Christmas break. They open the Midwest Classic Conference race in early January. Powers says he’d love to be over .500 before heading into the tough conference schedule.
