An eastern Iowa woman faces child endangerment charges for the malnourishment of her infant son. Davenport police say 20-year-old Amanda Smith gave birth to a boy in early October who weighed about six-and-a-half pounds. In mid-November, he was taken to a Davenport hospital weighing just five pounds.

Police say doctors found no medical reason for the weight loss and after keeping him five days, had the child’s weight up to nearly seven pounds. Police also charged Smith with theft for collecting up to ten-thousand dollars in state aid for another child, a daughter, who was reportedly taken by the Iowa Department of Human Services. Smith is due in court January 17th.
