Gold coin found in Mason City Salvation Army kettle

December 20, 2006 By admin

It’s not a Krugerrand, but the Mason City Salvation Army has found a gold coin of another sort in one of its red kettles. A “100 Corona” gold coin from Austria, minted in 1915, was found in the kettle from the Mason City Fareway store last night.

The 100 Corona coin is 98-percent gold, giving it a current value of just over 600-dollars. Since 1997, the Mason City Salvation Army has found a South African gold Krugerrand in a kettle during the annual fundraiser and for the last six years at least three Krugerrands were in the kettle at a time.
