Alford to watch Knight try to set record

December 28, 2006 By admin

Iowa basketball coach Steve Alford is headed to Lubbock, Texas where he will watch his former coach, Bob Knight, try to become the all-time leader in victories. Knight would pass Dean Smith for the all-time lead with 880 wins if the Red Raiders beat UNLV.

Alford says he’s talked with some former teammates, but is not sure how many will be back for the game. The Hawkeyes host Cornell on Saturday in their final pre-conference game and at 7-6 Alford feels his team has made progress the last couple of weeks.

Alford says they’ve been inconsistent and more soft than tough. Alford says they’ve grown in both those areas, but are still not where they want to be. That’s when the Hawks open the Big Ten race against Michigan State.
