For the first time since 2000, the Iowa football team finished with a losing record after a heartbreaking loss to Texas in the Alamo Bowl. The Hawkeyes jumped out to an early 14-0 lead but a couple of key mistakes were costly in a 26-24 loss.

The first came in the second quarter when tight end Scott Chandler was penalized for being an ineligible receiver on an apparent touchdown catch that would have given the Hawks a 21-3 edge. The other came on Iowa’s final possession. Starting at the Longhorn’s 48-yard line the Hawkeyes went to a reverse pass to Dominique Douglas who was dropped for a big loss.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Hawkeyes worked hard after finishing the regular season by losing five of their last six games. Ferentz says the work ethic the Hawkeyes showed in the month leading up to the Alamo Bowl will set the tone for next season.

Sophomore receiver Andy Brodell had a big game against Texas. He finished with six catches for 159 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Brodell says the way the Hawks prepared will carry over to the next season.
