Iowans who are looking for a project to keep them occupied during the winter months might consider volunteering for the Department of Natural Resources. Merry Rankin, director of the DNR’s Keepers of the Land program, says they could use a hand with a host of projects, from helping run a shooting range to repairing duck nesting boxes.

Some of the volunteer jobs involve going out in the woods and clearing out invasive plant species or clearing trails for cross-country skiing, as well as a batch of construction and maintenance projects that will help get things ready for spring. Rankin says Iowans who are interested in volunteering should go on-line to see what’s available.
