A lot of flyers still don’t quite get the rules about what’s allowed in carry-on bags. Unless it’s three ounces or less, liquids, gels and other items won’t get through security lines. But water, toiletries and other things aren’t going to waste at the Eastern Iowa Airport near Cedar Rapids.

The airport collected 20 boxes since mid-December, and several agencies picked up the items Monday to go to area homeless shelters. Airport spokeswoman Pam Hinman says security officials see that the items aren’t just thrown away.

Hinman says, "The T-S-A has done a real good job at checkpoint lines saying, sorry you can’t bring this on the plane, but you can donate it." The airport is currently collecting banned items for two different agencies.
