Eighteen-year-old Jose Tovar of Storm Lake, who is accused of killing his brother and wounding his parents, was ruled Tuesday mentally incompetent to stand trial. District Judge John Duffy suspended all court proceedings and ordered Tovar to begin treatment at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Oakdale.

Tovar is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of both attempted murder and willful injury. He’s accused of killing his older brother, 21-year-old Miguel Tovar, and trying to kill his parents, Jose Arturo Tovar and Maria Tovar, last February 19th in their Storm Lake home.

The brother was dead at the scene while the parents were both suffering from multiple stab wounds. Last March, Tovar’s attorney filed a request to determine Tovar’s competency to stand trial, stating he believed Tovar suffered from a mental disorder. No motive has been given for the stabbings.
