Alliant Energy is announcing plans to build a new power plant in Marshalltown. Scott Drzycimski  is a spokesman for Alliant, a subsidiary of Interstate Power and Light Company. Drzycimski says the new plant is part of the company’s "Energy for a New Generation" program.

He says the new 600-megawatt coal-fired electric-generation plant would be constructed next to the current power station in Marshalltown. Engineering is underway now and if all plans are approved, ground will be broken in 2008 or 2009 with the plant fully operational by 2013. Drzycimski credits Marshalltown leaders for landing the plant.

He says 600 megawatts of power is nearly four times more than the current facility produces. Alliant is investing one-point-two billion dollars over the next seven years in the project, which would create 65 permanent jobs and nearly a thousand construction jobs.
