Bob Sanders may be the smallest player on defense for the Indianapolis Colts but he has played a large role for a team that is getting set to play the Chicago Bears in Sunday’s Super Bowl in Miami. The former Iowa standout missed several games this season due to a knee injury but his return to safety for the start of the playoffs is considered a major part of their run to the AFC title.

Colts’ coach Tony Dungy says Sanders is one of team president Bill Polian’s special guys. Dungy says they maneuvered around and because Sanders had a foot injury and is only 5-8, they were able to get him in the second round.

Dungy talks about the impact Sanders makes on the defense, saying he has "striking power and striking ability" and loves to play the game. Dungy says Sanders bring enthusiasm to practices and the huddle, and that’s one of his best assets.

Sanders says he tries to lead by example. Sanders says he isn’t a vocal rah-rah leader. He says he feels if he does his job, guys will rally around you. Sanders says he just goes out and tries to make as many plays as he can.

Sanders is one of two former Hawkeyes playing a big role for the Colts. Tight end Dallas Clark leads the team in post-season receptions with 17.
