Funeral set for Guttenberg soldier

A northeast Iowa soldier killed in combat in Iraq will be laid to rest Friday. Twenty-one-year-old Army Corporal Stephen Shannon of Guttenberg died last Wednesday in Balad, Iraq when his armored vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. Shannon was a combat engineer with the "C" Company 397th Engineer Battalion, based in Wasau Wisconsin.

The unit was sent to Iraq last September to clear away roadside bombs. Shannon was a graduate of Clayton Ridge High School in Guttenberg, and had also attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Shannon’s funeral is set for Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg.
