Drake gets win, winning season

February 22, 2007 By admin

Winning basketball has returned to Drake University. The Bulldogs survived a huge second half rally by Evansville and got a late three pointer from Klayton Korver for an 82-79 win over Evansville, clinching the program’s first winning season since 1987. It was a special night for the Drake seniors who were playing their final game in the Knapp Center.

Drake coach Tom Davis on his postgame show on KRNT says the team has continued to learn and educate themselves on and off the court. He says the team takes care of business off the court and that’s how they play.

Davis says securing a winning season was a good step for the program. Davis says you’re not going to turn around Drake overnight, you have to do it a little bit at a time. Davis says the more you win, the more people will talk to you, and the more recruits will take notice.

One of the seniors is Nick Grant who scored a career high 25 points and added seven rebounds and four assists. Grant says it means a lot to secure the winning season after all he has been through at Drake. He says it was good to end his career at home with a "pretty good game." The Bulldogs improve to 16-13 overall and 6-11 in the Valley. They close out the regular season at Missouri State on Saturday.
