Teachers called 9-1-1 Friday at a Des Moines junior high when they realized the behavior of some students was out of the norm, even for adolescents. Des Moines Police Sergeant Todd Dykstra says the teachers were right. They found out the kids had taken some prescription pain pills one of the students had taken from a parent and brought to school.

Five children were taken to local hospitals by ambulance, others who hadn’t taken much of the medication were released to their parents. Most were doing pretty well, but Friday night two were still in serious condition. He didn’t know yet if anybody would be facing criminal charges.

The investigators will be look into it, and they’ll be filed appropriately if they decide any are warranted. The investigation centers on an eighth-grade girl at Hoyt Middle School in Des Moines, but the students involved are all minors and are not being named.
