Also in 2A Western Christian held Northeast Goose Lake to just eight second half points and roared away to an 85-39 win. The Wolfpack shot a blistering 68 percent in the opening half in building a 16 point lead at the break. Western Christian coach Jim Eekhoff says they’ve ben talking about having a break out game where they’d shoot the ball well, as he says they’ve not shot well all tournament.

 

Northwood-Kensett jumped out to a 10-0 lead at the outset then held off a fourth quarter rally by Boyden-Hull for a 54-51 win in a class 1A quarterfinal.The Vikings also survived foul trouble as a pair of starters fouled out in the fourth quarter. N-K coach Marty Cotter says they got into foul trouble and had to play some zone, which he doesn’t like to play. Cotter says they also got some good minutes off the bench. Walker finished with 15 points. Jordan Cotter also had 15 off the bench for the Vikings.

Lone Tree won the fourth quarter and the game. The Lions outscored Des Moines Christian 13-4 in the final frame and claimed a 46-37 opening round win in class 1A. LoneTree guard Derek Havel who finished with a game high 19 points for Lone Tree which will take a 21-6 record into Thursday’s 1A semifinals. Havel says it was a dream to get to the tournament, but he says they’ve done so much work, they weren’t coming just for vacation, they want to win it.

Des Moines Christian coach Dave Stubbs says Lone Tree’s size advantage was difficult for his team to contend with, as their tallest guy is 6-4, but he says they matched up pretty well until their big man got into foul trouble. Stubbs’ son Branden led Des Moines Christian with eight points.

Iowa Mennonite broke opened a close game by outscoring IKM (Manilla) 20-11 in the third quarter enroute to a 68-51 win over the Hawks in a class 1A quarterfinal. Carson Miller who led IMS with 23 points.

Eighth-ranked Wall-LakeView-Auburn shot only 19 percent but still came away with a victory. Upset minded East Buchanan missed four shots that could have tied or won the game in the final few seconds and WLVA held on for a 35-33 win. The final shot of the game came from East Buchanan’s Chris Reck whose 25-footer hit the front of the rim and rolled off as time expired.
