Today is the deadline for farmers to make decisions on federal crop insurance. Insurance broker Deanne Orwig runs an agency in Spencer. She says March 15 is the final date for making any selections to a present policy, and the final date for new policy-holders to apply for coverage — although new policyholders have till April 30 to provide information on their past yields, to establish the history. She says farmers have some options this spring.

Most farmers are reviewing their coverage to find out what option works best for them. She says the most popular coverage option for corn is 75 to 80-percent coverage, which gives them five to 500 to 550 dollars worth of coverage per acre. While the coverage per acre is greater, Orwig says the premiums have gone up, too. She runs Orwig All-Risk Agency in Spencer.
