A guilty verdict for a former Iowa sheriff accused of financial misdeeds. A Pottawatamie County jury Tuesday afternoon pronounced former Dallas County Sheriff Brian Gilbert guilty of felony theft. His own deputies stopped a car on Interstate-80 in March of 2006 and seized nearly one million dollars in cash. The currency, wrapped in plastic bags, was put into Gilbert’s car to be transported back to the sheriff’s office.

Gilbert says he stopped by his own home to close a garage door, but officers testified that when he got back to the station , one bag of cash was missing. After an investigation that concluded Gilbert took about $120,000, Gilbert resigned last October citing health reasons. He could face up to ten years when he’s sentenced, probably on June first.
